Introduction to Colossians

Written by the Apostle Paul from Prison in Rome. There are three other prison epistles. They are Philippians, Philemon, and Ephesians.
The date of the writing is AD 60-62. ()
The letter was a response to heresy called Gnosticism.
What is Gnosticism?
Gnosis - Greek word means “knowledge”. If you recieved the knowledge before you died your spirit would escape the body and go to heaven.
Jesus
The Creator of the world was evil.
Belief that all flesh is evil and separate from the spiritual world.
Jesus came to give us this knowledge.
He was Spirit only, not flesh.
What you do in the flesh has no consequence to the spiritual.
Purpose of Colossians
Colossians 2:8 NIV84
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Thanksgiving ()

Why is Paul Thankful?
Their faith in Christ.
Their love for others.
Their acceptance of the Gospel.

Intercession ()

That they will know the will of God (v.9)
That they will know the work of God (v.10a)
That they will know the Word of God (v. 10b)
That they will know the way of God (v.11-14)

Supremacy of Christ (Col. 1:15-23)

Jesus is Lord over creation ()

Jesus is over all. ()
Jesus is creator of all. ()
“en” - Jesus is the power of Creation.
“dis” - Jesus is the agent of Creation.
“eis” - Jesus is the benefactor of Creation. (Glory, Honor, Praise)
Jesus is before all. ()
Jesus is sustainer of all. ()

Jesus is Lord over the church ()

Jesus created the church. ()
Jesus contains all. ()
Jesus reconciles all. ()

Jesus is Lord over sin ()

Jesus re-created you.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
You were created in the image of Adam, now you are created in the image of Christ.
You were alienated from God, and enemies of God. Now you are reconciled to God, holy in his sight.

That is only accomplished through the Gospel.
Are you a servant of the Gospel?

Colossians: Paul’s Purpose ()

2 My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ,

This purpose protects us from find-sounding arguments against Christ and his Word!

Bondage and Freedom ()

The Christ life is to be continued. It is a own going process. We need to be strengthen, rooted, and built up.

Bondage through Deceptive Philosophies.

1. Deceptive Philosophies depend on human traditions.
2. Deceptive Philosophies are based on principles of the World, not Christ.

Freedom from Bondage

1. comes from Christ Jesus.
2. means your sins are forgiven.
3. means you are raised to new life.
4. means our punishment is taken away.
5. means power and authority over us, has been disarmed.

The exercise of our freedom through Christ.

1. Don’t let anyone replace the role of Christ in your life. (v. 16-17)
2. Don’t let anyone replace the worship of Christ in your life. (v. 18)
3. Don’t let anyone replace the church of Christ in your life. (v. 19)
4. Don’t let anyone replace the words of Christ in your life. (v.20-23)
