The Great Divide

Jesus was not self driven. His submissive obedience to the Father controlled all that He did. His brothers knew him, the Jews knew from where He came. Yet, they did not know that Jesus was doing the will of the Father. They knew the man Jesus but they did not know the One who taught Jesus.
Today is no different. People love knowledge. They like to be amazed. We all like to feel a rush of excitement.
On the news last night a reporter said how people today are seeking an authentic experience over clothes, gadgets, etc. They are spending their money on trips, and exotic adventures rather than spending money on things.

Christ or Deceiver

John 7:43–44 NIV
Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
John 7:
John points out how Jesus forced people to react. I wonder how long we would put up with Christ if He were to personally step into our lives? I wonder how long it would take us to get him out of our lives? I don’t think I would last long around Jesus the human. He didn’t play with sin, He exposed it!

Teacher or Fraud

John 7:15 NIV
The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”
John 7
Jew. Judean, belonging to Judah. The short form of the English word has developed from the French. The underlying Hebrew word is used first in as a national term, meaning citizens of Judah.
Elwell, W. A., & Beitzel, B. J. (1988). Jew. In Baker encyclopedia of the Bible (Vol. 2, p. 1164). Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House.

Jew. Judean, belonging to Judah. The short form of the English word has developed from the French. The underlying Hebrew word is used first in 2 Kings 16:6 as a national term, meaning citizens of Judah.

Jesus’ brothers were correct by instructing Jesus to make himself known publicly at the “festival of Tabernacles.”
Verse 15 once again seems to indicate that the Jews either did not know Jesus or only heard about him but never personally met him.
John 7:11–13 NIV
Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?” Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.” But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders.
John 7:11-12
It just seems odd to be that the Jewish leaders were looking for him as were people talking about him. Yet Jesus was there in secret and even when He was teaching there was still amazement over the depth of His teaching.
Teaching:

Liar or Man of Truth

Not His Teaching

Jesus claimed that what He taught was not His own

John 7:16–20 NIV
Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?” “You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
John 7:16
Verse 16 - Jesus teaching came from the one who sent him.
Verse 17 - anyone ( no restriction, indefinite, uncertainty). Literally, “anyone who chooses!”
Chooses - (desire) - a strong desire
To do means - to carry out or perform an action or course of action
Will (noun) - talking about an attitude of mind (especially one that favors one alternative over others).
Will (verb) - experiential knowledge -
What will they find out? They will find out from whom Jesus teaching comes. Specifically, whether the teaching of Christ is from God or from Jesus.
Detail:
To gain personal glory versus the man of truth - there is nothing false in him.
Key points:
Personal glory
Seeks the glory of the one sent - is the man of truth!
Nothing false about that man
Second point:
Moses gave you the law!
Yet not one of you keeps the law. You are not seeking the glory of the one who gave yo the law. Moses gave up the comfort of his Egyptian family and aligned himself with his true family.
Deep searching question: “Why are you trying to kill me?”
Personal glory vs a person of truth
Truth comes through God’s teaching - a person of truth is one who is obedient to God’s teaching.
Am I the real thing? Are you the real thing? Is this church the real thing? Are we here this morning on our own accord or are we here as those sent by God? Are we seeking to gain personal glory or are we seeking to honor God?
Why do the Jews enlist denial? A person doesn’t deny unless they are being accused of something.
Teaching:
Not Jesus Teaching
Speaking on your own
Gain personal glory
Do God’s will
The man of truth
Nothing false
Illustration: No one keeps the law.
Healing on the Sabbath
Circumcision is done on the Sabbath

Man’s Hypocrisy Exposed

John 7:21-
John 7:21–24 NIV
Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
If it is ok for them to perform a surgery on a Sabbath, then why are the angry that a person was healed on a Sabbath?
John 7:25-
They were acting according to their own personal interests. Again, they were seeking to gain personal glory rather than seeking the truth.
Dealing with the flesh is a greater priority for you than observing the Sabbath. Yet, when a man is healed on a Sabbath you get angry.

Truth Revealed

John 7:25–31 NIV
At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.” Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.” At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”
At that point:
Isn’t this the man - why can’t the authorities catch him? He is standing right here teaching publically. Could it be that the authorities have actually concluded that this Jesus is the Messiah?
All of a sudden they connect the teaching with the teacher. God is in the business of changing Lives.
They are no longer mesmerized by the teaching of Jesus. Their ambition and way of life has been exposed. Denial did not stop the great physician from surgery.
John 7:20 NIV
“You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
So, they attempt to expose Christ in an effort to shut Him down. Unknowingly, they are applying the very test that Jesus just put forth.
So, they attempt to expose Christ in an effort to shut Him down. Unknowingly, they are applying the very test that Jesus just put forth.
Jesus teaching has put them into a bind. The need to feel good is not being met. Jesus teaching is keeping them from attaining their goal.
Isn’t this the man - why can’t the authorities catch him? He is standing right here teaching publically. Could it be that the authorities have actually concluded that this Jesus is the Messiah?
We know from where Jesus came.
The authority of Jesus. They know about Jesus; however, they don’t know about the authority to whom Christ is submitting and obedient.
Jesus declared in a loud voice (screamed is considered here). His declaration would have come across as harsh sounding.
Teaching:
Not mine
Speaking on your own
Gain personal glory
Do God’s will
The man of truth
Nothing false

Jesus’ invitation to the thirsty to come to Him to drink in John 7:37–44 relates to references to the Feast of Tabernacles in Zech 14:1–21 and Ezek 47:1–12; the setting is the water libation service, where water was brought up to the altar and poured over it (Rubenstein, History of Sukkot, 117–31). In John 8:12, when Jesus declares he is the “light of the world,” the setting could be the last night of the feast, when celebrants stayed up all night in the temple courts, which were lit by enormous lamps (Rubenstein, The History of Sukkot, 137–38).
