Wholly devoted to Holy Living

We are called to be holy because God is holy (1Pt1:16) and to do that we must understand the thing that keeps us from holy and what we need to do to have a wholly devoted to holy living.

God wants us to have holy life (1Pt1:16)
God wants to give us life full (Jn10:10)
Be holy by dwelling on holy things (Php4:8-9)
Be holy by delighting on holy things (Ps1:2)
Be holy by applying holy things (Jos1:8)
Holiness, we can be separated from it because of sin (Isa59:2)
We can be holy, because He is holy and we walk in the light with Him (1Jn1:7)

God wants us to have holy life (1Pt1:16)
1 Peter 1:16 NASB95
16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
God wants us to live a holy life, and also, God wants us to live life, life full and He wants to give it to us.
John 10:10 NIV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
In other versions is says “have it abundantly” or others “more abundantly” Can you get the picture it is more than just full isn’t it?
So as we are looking at sin today, so that we can be holy, we need to be reminded of some holy things to dwell on, some holy things to apply into our lives.
Philippians 4:8 NIV
8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

8 “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.
Delight in, make your way prosperous and successful, don’t we all want that? God wants that for us too, and He gives us to way to have it too! Though the way may not be easy, it may not be popular for there are some things that we need to look at, discuss and take action on if we want to be wholly devoted to holy living.

People do not like to hear you are a sinner, that they are sinners, much less us admit or talk about that we too are sinners. We don’t like to remember that we still fall short at times. But in reality we do need to know, we do need to be reminded of what sin is so we can turn from it. We need to remember God’s grace and continue to walk in that and to be continually cleansed of our sins.
Isaiah 59:2 NASB95
2 But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
And then the continual cleansing part
1 John 1:7 NASB95
7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
In this series we have already looked at dwelling on The Word, God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Faith, Hope, Love, Joy and peace, today we will dwell on, but not in, sin. Sin must be addressed for it separates us from God as I just read Isa59:2.

Definition of sin

Sin, when you think about it, what do you think it means? Does sin have any impact on your life today? May we take a few minutes and define sin and give biblical examples of defined, displayed sin.
hamartia: a sin, failure

Sin = missing the mark
Sin = we all fall short and have sinned (Rom3:23)
Romans 3:23 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Sin = is transgression of the Law (1Jn3:4) and again, we all sin (1Jn1:8-9)

4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.

Types of sin
Sins of commission (Mk10:19; Gal5:19-21)
Sins of commission, Here are some that we see are sins, for there is the command from God not to do these things.
Mark 10:19 NASB95
19 “You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’ ”
So, if we do any of these things then we know we are sinning since they are named by the scripture.
But how about these, are these sins of commission?
Galatians 5:19–20 NASB95
19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions,
Galatians 5:21 NASB95
21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Sins of commission yes! For these are practiced, and that means there was a choice to do it.
Sins of Omission (Jm4:17; Mt5:44)
Failure to do good would be considered sins of omission
James 4:17 NASB95
17 Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
Or how bout
Matthew 5:44 NASB95
44 “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
If we do not pray for our enemies, do not pray for those who persecute us then it is a sin of omission. Here is the dictionary definition of omission.
o·mis·sion (noun) someone or something that has been left out or excluded; the action of excluding or leaving out someone or something; a failure to do something, especially something that one has a moral or legal obligation to do.
Are we guilty of sins of omission? Can we be guilty of them?
Anyone getting uncomfortable in this subject? That now leads us to our next one.
Sins of conscience (Rom14:22-23; Heb13:18)
Romans 14:22–23 NASB95
22 The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. 23 But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
So, may you consider what would be a sin of conscience for you, as for me one was smoking (expand on this)
One commentator said
“To act without faith (without conviction that what you do is right) would be a sin of conscience.”
We want to have a clear conscience in all that we do so here is another scripture to consider
Hebrews 13:18 NASB95
18 Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a good conscience, desiring to conduct ourselves honorably in all things.
To do the right thing without a good conscience would be a sin of conscience.
Sin has severe consequences, sin needs to be addressed for when it is acknowledge, the problem, then it can be dealt with.

The problem with sin

Sin, missing the mark, sin separates us from God, sin keeps us out of the kingdom of heaven. Sin has many faucets to it.

We are all sinners, we all fall short of the glory of God, we all miss the mark, Paul says this, in bringing in a quote he uses from Psm14:1-3.

9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin;
Romans 3:10–11 NASB95
10 as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one; 11 There is none who understands, There is none who seeks for God;
And if we stumble in one area, we stumble in them all.

10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
A slave to sin, not by one act, but by practiced sin, a choice of sin. When we do that we then experience:
Don’t leave out the captivity of sin (Rom7:14-24)
While this maybe a longer read, it is worth it, for we do struggle in our flesh to do the right thing and not do the wrong thing, look what Paul says here.

14 For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.

16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

Are you uncomfortable or are you sanctimonious thinking you have no sin at all? We need to remember the humble state in which we came to Christ in the first place. Because of the next one>
The alienation of sin (Eph4:18)

18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;
Hard hearts that alienated us from life of God, so in other words sin have drastic results.
The severity, results of sin (Isa59:2; Rom6:23; Act17:30-31)

In our time now, in this age, there is no claim to ignorance, what we do with sin impacts eternity, it is a most serious problem, but thanks be to God that He gives us the solution to sin.

Solution to sin

Who doesn’t like a solution to a problem? Especially if it is an eternal problem. Where there is the severity of sin, there is the sufficiency to the solution of sin too.

Jesus is God’s solution, God’s perfect plan, acceptable sacrifice to take care of our sin problem.

7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
From the riches of His grace, from the throne room in heaven, God sent His Son to redeem us, to buy us back from the captivity of sin.

1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
No longer are we condemned to life separated from God, but now being in Christ where there is no condemnation and our sinful flesh is dealt with.

I need to stop just for a minute, there is a requirement here, we must die to the flesh, if we want to have the freedom, if we want to have the assurance we must put to death the flesh.

3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Dead to sin; which means sin is dead to us (Rom6:1-2)
Body of sin dealt with, done away with (Rom6:6-7)
Sin dealt with that we may walk in newness of life (Rom6:4)
Sin dealt with so you can present yourself as alive to God, instruments of righteousness (Rom6:11-13)
May we remember it is dealt with, and we are raised up (COl2:12-13)
May we remember other words given so we have assurance (1Jn5:11-13)

Have you received the gift, accepted the solution offered by God? Have you received the salvation offered, if so, then allow the work of the Spirit through the Word of God to bring you to the maturity and the unity of the faith to fullness of Christ.
