Wholly devoted to Holy Living
We are called to be holy because God is holy (1Pt1:16) and to do that we must understand the thing that keeps us from holy and what we need to do to have a wholly devoted to holy living.
________________________________________________
God wants us to have holy life (1Pt1:16)
God wants to give us life full (Jn10:10)
Be holy by dwelling on holy things (Php4:8-9)
Be holy by delighting on holy things (Ps1:2)
Be holy by applying holy things (Jos1:8)
Holiness, we can be separated from it because of sin (Isa59:2)
We can be holy, because He is holy and we walk in the light with Him (1Jn1:7)
________________________________________________
God wants us to have holy life (1Pt1:16)
God wants us to live a holy life, and also, God wants us to live life, life full and He wants to give it to us.
In other versions is says “have it abundantly” or others “more abundantly” Can you get the picture it is more than just full isn’t it?
So as we are looking at sin today, so that we can be holy, we need to be reminded of some holy things to dwell on, some holy things to apply into our lives.
and the application
Other good things to dwell on when considering holiness
and some more application
Delight in, make your way prosperous and successful, don’t we all want that?
God wants that for us too, and He gives us to way to have it too!
Though the way may not be easy, it may not be popular for there are some things that we need to look at, discuss and take action on if we want to be wholly devoted to holy living.
(insert you are a sinner picture here)
People do not like to hear you are a sinner, that they are sinners, much less us admit or talk about that we too are sinners.
We don’t like to remember that we still fall short at times.
But in reality we do need to know, we do need to be reminded of what sin is so we can turn from it.
We need to remember God’s grace and continue to walk in that and to be continually cleansed of our sins.
And then the continual cleansing part
In this series we have already looked at dwelling on The Word, God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Faith, Hope, Love, Joy and peace, today we will dwell on, but not in, sin.
Sin must be addressed for it separates us from God as I just read Isa59:2.
(briefly expand on the severity of sin) keep it short!
Definition of sin
Sin, when you think about it, what do you think it means?
Does sin have any impact on your life today?
May we take a few minutes and define sin and give biblical examples of defined, displayed sin.
hamartia: a sin, failure
Original Word: ἁμαρτία, ας, ἡ
Part of Speech: Noun, Feminine
Transliteration: hamartia
Phonetic Spelling: (ham-ar-tee'-ah)

(insert target picture here)
Sin = missing the mark
Sin = we all fall short and have sinned (Rom3:23)
Sin = is transgression of the Law (1Jn3:4) and again, we all sin (1Jn1:8-9)
here is the other John passage referenced
Types of sin
Sins of commission (Mk10:19; Gal5:19-21)
Sins of commission, Here are some that we see are sins, for there is the command from God not to do these things.
So, if we do any of these things then we know we are sinning since they are named by the scripture.
But how about these, are these sins of commission?
Sins of commission yes!
For these are practiced, and that means there was a choice to do it.
Sins of Omission (Jm4:17; Mt5:44)
Failure to do good would be considered sins of omission
Or how bout
If we do not pray for our enemies, do not pray for those who persecute us then it is a sin of omission.
Here is the dictionary definition of omission.
o·mis·sion (noun) someone or something that has been left out or excluded; the action of excluding or leaving out someone or something; a failure to do something, especially something that one has a moral or legal obligation to do.
Are we guilty of sins of omission?
Can we be guilty of them?
Anyone getting uncomfortable in this subject?
That now leads us to our next one.
Sins of conscience (Rom14:22-23; Heb13:18)
So, may you consider what would be a sin of conscience for you, as for me one was smoking (expand on this)
One commentator said
“To act without faith (without conviction that what you do is right) would be a sin of conscience.”
We want to have a clear conscience in all that we do so here is another scripture to consider
To do the right thing without a good conscience would be a sin of conscience.
Sin has severe consequences, sin needs to be addressed for when it is acknowledge, the problem, then it can be dealt with.
The problem with sin
Sin, missing the mark, sin separates us from God, sin keeps us out of the kingdom of heaven.
Sin has many faucets to it.
______________________________________________
The guilt of sin (Rom3:23; Rom3:9-10; Jam2:10)
The bondage of sin (Jn8:34)
Don’t leave out the captivity of sin (Rom7:14-24)
How about the state of sin (Eph2:1)
The alienation of sin (Eph4:18)
The severity, results of sin (Isa59:2; Rom6:23)
___________________________________________
The guilt of sin (Rom3:23 Rom3:9-10; Jam2:10)
We are all sinners, we all fall short of the glory of God, we all miss the mark, Paul says this, in bringing in a quote he uses from Psm14:1-3.
And if we stumble in one area, we stumble in them all.
, one sin makes us guilt, separates us from God. Puts is in:
The bondage of sin (Jn8:34)
A slave to sin, not by one act, but by practiced sin, a choice of sin.
When we do that we then experience:
Don’t leave out the captivity of sin (Rom7:14-24)
While this maybe a longer read, it is worth it, for we do struggle in our flesh to do the right thing and not do the wrong thing, look what Paul says here.
And finally his conclusion; knowing he was sold into the bondage of sin (v.14)
Oh that leads us knowing:
How about the state of sin (Eph2:1)
Are you uncomfortable or are you sanctimonious thinking you have no sin at all?
We need to remember the humble state in which we came to Christ in the first place.
Because of the next one>
The alienation of sin (Eph4:18)
Hard hearts that alienated us from life of God, so in other words sin have drastic results.
The severity, results of sin (Isa59:2; Rom6:23; Act17:30-31)
and then
In our time now, in this age, there is no claim to ignorance, what we do with sin impacts eternity, it is a most serious problem, but thanks be to God that He gives us the solution to sin.
Solution to sin
Who doesn’t like a solution to a problem?
Especially if it is an eternal problem.
