Intro about roads.
The road you take determines where you end up. What ever I think… go the other way. What ever seems right??? probably not. Driving there can be several roads that will eventually get us to the right place.
Spiritually, it is not that way.
Intro about choices - either or. only two seems simple - narrow it down to two. - Am I gonna get out of bed this morning???
All through the sermon on the mount, Jesus has been showing two kinds of ways. In the very beginning… I want to show you a different kind of righteousness than that of the scribes and teachers of the law.
Two kinds of ways… You have heard it said… don’t murder, but I say… two ways.
Ch 6 - Some people practice their righteousness to be seen by others… they pray, they fast, they do religious things so people will see them…
Ch 7 Two kinds of people… one judgmental and condemning… one seeing lots of specks, but not seeing the plank in their own eyes…
Strait and Narrow
Two Gates - Two Ways - Two destinations
Matthew 7:13–14 NASB95
13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14 “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
Choice to make.
After an incredible sermon that has painted a picture of life as a citizen of the kingdom of God, Jesus says there is a way to become a citizen of this KINGDOM. -
Matthew 7:13 NASB95
13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.
The Christian life is entered through the narrow gate.
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Two Gates
After an incredible sermon that has painted a picture of life as a citizen of the kingdom of God, Jesus says there is a way to become a citizen of this KINGDOM. - through the narrow Gate.
Narrow - Wide
Enter through the narrow gate… Because there is another gate… gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction.
Two kinds of people. Those that have entered the narrow gate, and those that have not.
Many enter through it.
Clarkston - many countries. Many Religions.
Athiest… Agnostic. Hindu. Muslim…
THEN THERE IS US. Those of us that are in church and Christians. Many - them, FEW - US.
Jesus is speaking to religious people. Later in this passage. Talk about two kinds of trees… Many will say to me Lord, Lord…
These are people that think they are on the right road…People that think they are Christians… but are on the road that leads to destruction.
Live in a time where the gospel is being watered down.
He drew a circle that shut me out
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in.
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
—Edwin Markham
THIS IS SO EVIDENT OF THE CULTURE WE LIVE IN… Tolerance. Celebration of things the Bible clearly calls sin.
We live in a time where many churches are widening the circle… live how ever you want… As long as you believe in Jesus and have repeated a prayer at some point in your life you are ok.
James 2:19 NASB95
19 You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
Matthew 7:14 NASB95
14 “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
The Christian life is entered through the narrow gate.
Galatians 1:8–9 NASB95
8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
The Narrow Gate leads to a narrow way.
Any other Gospel is no gospel at all!
We enter the narrow gate through repentance and surrender.
Mark 1:14–15 NASB95
14 Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
M
SINCERE IN MY BELIEF. THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS
broad is the pat that leads to destruction. Many enter through it.
Jesus says there are two gates.
Jeremiah 21:8 NASB95
8 “You shall also say to this people, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.
Think of it as
Enter the narrow…
It is easy to say on the broad road… do nothing…
The narrow road of following Christ is costly… requires repentance of sin… it is lonely and unpopular… (crowds going a different direction - may feel like the minoritiy.
way is narrow… word is a word that means oppress or afflict. Suffer hardship… this life is not easy… Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness… 5:10
2 Timothy 3:12 NASB95
12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
;12
Worth every mile…
The narrow way leads to life!!
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in.
