Title - The Great Commission

Series - Discipleship 301
Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

The Main Point

The Great Commission of Jesus Christ is a mandate that

Discipleship - a proper understanding

What discipleship is not

Discipleship is not another stage in the Christian life.
Acts 11:26 NKJV
26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
the Christians were originally called Disciples.
Christian means a follower of Christ (specifically)
Discipleship is not an exclusive work of those in the ministry.
Acts 8:1 NKJV
1 Now Saul was consenting to his death. At that time a great persecution arose against the church which was at Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles.
Acts 8:4 NKJV
4 Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.
they - the members of the church
preach the word - evangelizing, proclaiming the good news
Discipleship is not all about listening to a lecture.
to be a disciples means “to be a follower not only of Christ’s teaching, but also of His work.
Matthew 4:19 NKJV
19 Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
before Jesus began saving souls, He was already preparing His disiples for the same work.
Jesus was showing these men, right from the start, the purpose of their calling.

What discipleship is

It is an activitiy

a personal activity - the activity of following and becoming like Jesus Christ.
an other-focused activity - the activity of bringing people to follow Christ and become like Christ.

It is a command

Matthew 28:19 NKJV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
go and make disicples…

It is a life-long prace

Discipleship is the activity of bringing people to Christ so that they also become disciples, through life connections.

What is a “disciple” (profile)

Marks of a true disciple

Conclusion

Discipleship is a lifetime of following Christ that results in new converts who also become faithful followers of the Lord.

Our action plan

identify and recruit mature men and women in among us who may become “disciplers”
identify the new converts, and the young believers, among us that may be paired with the disciplers.
Introduce the discipler and disciples to begin the discipling-making process . This serves 2 purposes
help the new belivers mature in faith
provide training and equipping as preparation for makeing “new” disciples
After a few months, encourage the disciplers to begin making disciples.
relatives
friends
community - workplace, street where we live, schoolmates,
complete strangers
