Prayer
Mark 1:21–34 NASB95
They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. They were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” Throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.” Immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee. And immediately after they came out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her. And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them. When evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed. And the whole city had gathered at the door. And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.

Capernaum

Knowledge and Faith

Mark 1:21–28 NASB95

Demons knew Christ before anyone else -

not saved or regenerate
This demon actually sought to challenge Christ, and lost
Lesson: Any progress we make in our Christian walk will be resisted by Satan and His demons
Head knowledge of Christianity will not save you - this is what the demons had
They know He is the Christ
They know He will judge the world
They know He will cast them into hell
Many Christians have less faith than the devil
Many doubt realities of hell, damnation, eternal punishment - not demons
Our faith needs to be of heart AND head
Faith and works - sanctification
Must not only know Christ, but love Him and cling to Him with our hearts
We must get to know Him by hearing His word and by prayer for mercy and grace
Luther - possessive pronouns: What is the difference?
Christ is a savour
Christ is my saviour (this is the true Christian)

Where to go in time of trouble (29-32)

Mark 1:29–32 NASB95
And immediately after they came out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her. And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them. When evening came, after the sun had set, they began bringing to Him all who were ill and those who were demon-possessed.
friends of Simon’s wife are a good example: told Jesus she was sick
Jesus is the ultimate remedy
Doctors may help, Lawyers may help, friend may help
First, call upon Jesus though - should be our first resort, not last
No one else is so effective, compassionate, willing to help
From J.C. Ryle: When Jacob was in trouble he turned to his God first—; “Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of Esau.” (Gen. 32:11.) When Hezekiah was in trouble, he first spread Sennacherib’s letter before the Lord;—“I beseech thee, save thou us out of his hand.” (2 Kings 19:19.) When Lazarus fell sick, his sisters sent immediately to Jesus;—“Lord,” they said, “he whom thou lovest is sick.” (John 11:2.) Now let us do likewise. “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee.” “Casting all your care upon Him.” “In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (Psa. 55:22; 1 Pet. 5:7; Phil. 4:6.)
Ryle, J. C. (1859). Expository Thoughts on Mark (pp. 13–14). London: William Hunt.
We need to follow this example
This is a world full of sin, sorrow, suffering - we will experience pain, loss and grief before we die
We must remember always that no matter what, Jesus is there - we need to know this before troubles come
We need to know what to do when sickness, death, loss, disappointment assaults us
Let’s remember to tell Jesus, first

Jesus: the perfect Doctor

Mark 1:33–34 NASB95
And the whole city had gathered at the door. And He healed many who were ill with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He was not permitting the demons to speak, because they knew who He was.
As soon as Jesus took the woman’s hand, the fever left her
Not only was she healed, she was back on her feet and serving them!
She was not weakened by the sickness, she came back strong!
This is how Jesus heals us of our sin-sickness
not only mercy and forgiveness - renewing grace!
If we receive Him as our doctor
power to become sons of God
cleans us with His Spirit
washes us in His precious blood
Justifies and sanctifies us
bestows a new heart
forgives us all our sins
Gives us strength for service and ministry
We are not just healed of our sin-sickness, we gain a new heart and a right spirit, so we can live to please God
Word spread because of the exorcism in the synagogue and the healing - everyone came

Conclusion and Summary

If you want to serve Christ, but are afraid to begin:
Many like you
Afraid that if they come forward, they will fail
They fear that if they fail, they will shame their profession of faith
Fear no longer
Jesus is an almighty saviour - never forsakes us, will give us power to persevere
Once raised by Him, they will continue to the end.
Power to overcome the world, crucify the flesh, resist the devil
They just have to begin - Jesus will enable them to finish
If you are serving Christ, these words should comfort you
Don’t worry about your human weakness - we all have this affliction and the Lord knows it
Don’t worry about doubts and anxiety/fear
Do not fear
Difficulties will disappear
The lion that blocks us, is in fact chained
The Jesus who saved you will give you the power to continue to the end.
He will love to the end-he will never lose even one sheep
The healed soul will always serve the Lord - Grace will always lead to glory
