The Most Holy Trinity

How do I start the Mass? I say , the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all, and you say, and with your spirit, but also say, the Lord be with you, and then you say, & with your spirit, but I mean the triune God, together. When we say holy holy holy Lord God of hosts, God is thrice holy and this is from the Old Testament which is how we see little clues in the Old Testament that God is three. We also see it at the very beginning when God says let us make man in our image, God is not three gods, God is one God with three persons God is three who’s and one what. When we say kyrie eleison Cristo eleison kyrie eleison we are saying God father mercy Christ the second person have mercy God the Holy Spirit have mercy. And finally when we make our sacrifice upon the altar all the prayers are directed to the Father and the sacrifice that we offer the Father is the sacrifice of the Son, the great high priest who offered himself on the altar of the cross and we offer it up in the power of the Holy Spirit. And so this divine worship that we offer every Sunday is completely Trinitarian, and that as Saint Athanasius says if we are to worship outside of this we have surely left the church of God and can’t be called Christian.

¿Cómo empiezo la Misa? Digo, la gracia de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el amor de Dios y la comunión del Espíritu Santo estén con todos Ustedes, y dicen, y con tu espíritu, pero también puedo decir, el Señor estén con ustedes, y entonces dicen el mismo, y con tu espíritu, pero me refiero al Dios trino, juntos. Cuando decimos Santo Santo Santo, Señor Dios de los cielos, Dios es tres veces Santo y esto es del Antiguo Testamento, así es como vemos pequeñas pistas en el Antiguo Testamento de que Dios es Trino. También lo vemos al principio cuando Dios dice que hagamos al hombre a nuestra imagen, Dios no es tres dioses, Dios es un Dios con tres personas Dios es tres quiénes y uno qué. Cuando decimos Kyrie eleison Cristo eleison Kyrie eleison estamos diciendo Dios padre, ten misericordia, Cristo segunda persona, ten piedad, Dios Espíritu Santo ten piedad. Y finalmente cuando hacemos nuestro sacrificio sobre el altar todas las oraciones van dirigidas al Padre y el sacrificio que ofrecemos al Padre es el sacrificio del Hijo, el gran sumo sacerdote que se ofreció a sí mismo en el altar de la cruz y nosotros lo ofrecemos en el poder del Espíritu Santo. Y entonces este culto divino que ofrecemos todos los domingos es completamente Trinitario, y como dice San Atanasio si vamos a adorar fuera de esto, seguramente hemos dejado la iglesia de Dios y no podemos llamarnos cristianos.

Spanish Homily

La última misa dominical me la perdí hace unos 11 años. Todavía se queda conmigo.La primera misa qué celebre hace un ano, era hoy, Tristeza para mi, reconciliacion y gozo para siempre!

Mi padre, dijo satisfecho después de que aprobé quizás la prueba académica más importante de mi vida: "Esto es bueno, ¡voy a sentarme en el jacuzzi y tomar una cerveza!" Había una satisfacción en saber que estaba teniendo éxito como su hijo, que era mayor que sus propios logros, de hecho, mis logros eran suyos. Mi gloria estaba en el gozo de mis padres, y su gloria era compartida conmigo.

Así que en Cristo, Él dijo una vez: “¡Padre, glorifica tu nombre!” “¡Lo he glorificado y lo glorificaré de nuevo!”

“Padre, glorifícame en tu presencia con la gloria que tuve contigo antes del comienzo del mundo”. ¿Y el Espíritu hoy? “Él me glorificará…” Lo mismo

En el Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, párrafo 221, vemos – “. . . Dios ha revelado su secreto más íntimo: Dios mismo es un eterno intercambio de amor, Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo, y nos ha destinado a participar en ese intercambio”.

La Trinidad es tres y uno. El tres se refiere al Quien de Dios, Padre Hijo y Espíritu. El uno se refiere al qué de la Deidad, la naturaleza de Dios, la sustancia de Dios, una sustancia, una naturaleza, tres personas.

No puedes llegar a la Trinidad por tu cuenta. Así como no pudiste llegar a “Dios es amor” (1 Jn 4:8) por la sola razón, pero nos fue revelado, “Que Dios amó tanto al mundo que nos dio a su hijo unigénito…”

Así que si Dios es amor, que nos habla de cómo hemos de vivir. Dios no es simplemente amante o amado, ¡Él es todo amor, pero no uso! ¿Qué estaba haciendo Dios desde antes de los tiempos? ¿Cómo puede Él ser amor completamente solo? ¿Sin creación?

233 Los cristianos son bautizados en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo: no en sus nombres, porque hay un solo Dios, el Padre todopoderoso, su Hijo único y el Espíritu Santo: la Santísima Trinidad.

234 El misterio de la Santísima Trinidad es el misterio central de la fe y de la vida cristiana. Es el misterio de Dios en sí mismo. Es, por tanto, la fuente de todos los demás misterios de la fe, la luz que los ilumina. Es la enseñanza más fundamental y esencial en la “jerarquía de las verdades de la fe”.

¿Por qué es este un gran día? Porque somos Trinitarios.

Somos cristianos, Cristo es Dios. Podemos orarle a Él, y podemos llamarlo Mediador, el único mediador entre Dios y el hombre, pero lo llamamos así siendo Él mismo Dios.

Los mormones, por ejemplo, no son trinitarios, se llaman a sí mismos cristianos, pero Dios Padre es el que creó el alma de Cristo del material espiritual anterior a la creación.

Los arrianos cantaban (del tercer siglo):

“Hubo un tiempo en que Cristo no existía”.

Los gnósticos, tambien muy temprano, decían que el Espíritu Santo es un superángel, pero no Dios.

Nos convertimos en lo que adoramos. Muchos dioses, se convierte en caos, un solo dios del que somos esclavos, al que nos sometemos, nos hacemos dueños de nosotros mismos y hacemos de los demás esclavos.

Creo en un solo Dios, Padre todopoderoso,

Creador del cielo y de la tierra,

de todo lo visible y lo invisible, - Bueno

Creo en un solo Señor, Jesucristo, Hijo único de Dios,

nacido del Padre antes de todos los siglos:

Eso es lo que hacen los Padres, engendran hijos, ahora Cristo es engendrado eternamente, es decir, Él siempre procede del Padre, siempre es engendrado.

Dios de Dios, Luz de Luz,

Dios verdadero de Dios verdadero,

engendrado, no creado,

de la misma naturaleza del Padre, (Consubstantial)

por quien todo fue hecho;

que por nosotros, los hombres,

y por nuestra salvación bajó del cielo,

y por obra del Espíritu Santo

se encarnó de María,

y sólo el Hijo se encarnó, somos salvos por su condescendencia

Creo en el Espíritu Santo, Señor y dador de vida,

que procede del Padre y del Hijo, con el Padre y el Hijo

recibe una misma adoración y gloria,

y que habló por los profetas.

¿Porque es esto importante? Bueno, Cristo vino desde el cielo para decirnos esto. Y luego Él prometió que sería mejor para nosotros que Él se fuera, para que Él pudiera enviar el Espíritu, y que pudiéramos ser hechos partícipes de Su Naturaleza Divina, y vivir para siempre.

Y así, aplicación práctica. JPII dijo que la familia es la mejor imagen que tenemos de la Trinidad aquí en esta Tierra. ¿Cómo?

Al adorar bien, la comprensión católica de la doctrina de la Trinidad, permita que nuestras familias sean correctas,

un padre es una imagen del Padre celestial (esa es toda la responsabilidad de amar y evitar el pecado),

los hijos son una imagen del Hijo (así que niños, ¡Sean como Cristo!, lo que significa ser obedientes y confiados de sus padres, madres),

Madres, ¿dónde las deja eso? ¿No es la esposa/madre el alma del hogar que representa al Espíritu Santo? Y fíjense, el Espíritu es enviado por el Padre y el Hijo, procedente del Padre y del Hijo.

No hay quejas dentro de Dios, solo hay confianza. Desconfiamos unos de otros porque nos hemos lastimado unos a otros, padres, hijos, cónyuges. ¡Pero eso no cambia el ideal! En tu unicidad, tenéis la capacidad, porque habéis recibido del Espíritu en tu Bautismo y Confirmación y son partícipes del Único Pan y del Único Cáliz, podéis vivir vuestra vocación.

¡Imitación de Cristo, sí! Pero la imitación de Dios, imitatio Dei

“Dios es amor y vive en sí mismo un misterio de comunión amorosa personal. Al crear el género humano a su imagen y mantenerlo continuamente en el ser, Dios inscribió en la humanidad del hombre y de la mujer la vocación, y por tanto la capacidad y la responsabilidad, del amor y de la comunión. El amor es, pues, la vocación fundamental e innata de todo ser humano”. JP II FC

Uno es Amor, y tres son los amados...

Una es la Luz, y tres los resplandores,

una la Llama viva en tres ardores,

que consumen el alma en sus fulgores;

...Tres los hermosos son, y una Hermosura

sola, en que el alma abreva más dulzura

cuanto más se remonta en la espesura;

y es sueño lo demás. Amén.

English Trinity Homily

The last Sunday Mass I missed some 11 years ago. Still sticks with me. The first Mass I celebrated was on this day, last year, so I have sadness thinking of that time before, but God reconciled me and through a divine interplay, he made this day one of joy for me.

My Father, said satisfied after I passed perhaps my biggest academic test in my life, “This is good, I’m going to go sit in the hot tub and have a beer!” There was a satisfaction in knowing I was succeeding as his son, that was greater than his own accomplishments, indeed, my accomplishments were his. My glory was in the joy of my parents, and their glory was shared with me. So in Christ, He once said, “Father, glorify your name!” “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again!” “Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” And what about the Spirit? “He will glorify me…”

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 221, we see – “. . . God has revealed his innermost secret: God himself is an eternal exchange of love, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and he has destined us to share in that exchange.”

The Trinity is three and one. The three refers to The Who of God, Father Son and Spirit. The one refers to the what of the Godhead, the nature of God, the substance of God, one substance, one nature, three persons.

You cannot arrive at the Trinity on your own. Just like you couldn’t arrive at “God is love” (1 Jn 4:8) by reason alone, but it was revealed to us, “That God so loved the world that He gave us his only begotten son…” So if God is love, that tells us about how we are to live. God isn’t merely lover, or beloved, He is all love, but not use! What was God doing from before time? How can He be love all alone? W/out creation?

Plato for example, couldn’t just comprehend and reason his way to God being three and one, genius though he was.

The Ancient Romans believed in many gods. We aren’t polytheists, there is only one God.

St. Paul on the other hand was a strict monotheist, there is only one God. He would say at least one time a day - “Hear O Israel! The Lord is God the Lord alone! Therefore you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength, Drill this into your children, whether you are busy or at rest, at home or abroad.” Or how about the other big law, “You shall have no other gods but me”

How does he get away with saying, “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ… poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given us”?

Without assistance in interpreting we could easily fall into the trap of some other readers of Scripture

233 Christians are baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: not in their names, for there is only one God, the almighty Father, his only Son, and the Holy Spirit: the Most Holy Trinity.

234 The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the “hierarchy of the truths of faith.”

Why is this a big day? Because we are Trinitarians. We are Christians, Christ is God. We can pray to Him, and we can call Him Mediator, the one mediator between God and man, but we call Him that while Himself being God.

Mormons, for example, aren’t Trinitarians, they call themselves Christians, but God the Father is he who created the soul of Christ out of the pre creation spiritual material.

The Arians sang, “There was a time when Christ was not.”

The Gnostics said that the Holy Spirit is a super-angel, but not God.

We become what we worship. Many gods, becomes chaos, one god who we are slaves to, whom we submit to, we become masters ourselves and make others as slaves.

Look to see what people say on the topic of the Trinity, if they get this wrong, what a mess they will indeed create - St. Augustine (pg 68, The Trinity)

This is all why our Creed is carefully Crafted.

I believe in God, the Father the Almighty,

Maker of Heaven and Earth,

and of all things visible and invisible. good

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Son of God,

the Only-Begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages; (That’s what Fathers do, they beget children, now Christ is eternally begotten, meaning He is always proceeding from the Father, always being begotten).

Light from Light;

True God of True God;

begotten, not made;

Consubstantial with the Father,

by Whom all things were made;

and only the Son became Encarnate, we are saved by His condescension

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life,

Who proceeds from the Father and the Son;

Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified;

Who spoke by the prophets.

Why is this all so important? Well, Christ came all the way down from heaven to tell us this. And then He promised that it would be better for us that He go, so that He could send the Spirit, and that we could be made partakers of His Divine Nature, and live forever.

Augustine said the Trinity is marked on all of us, Look at the human mind: Memory, Intellect and Will. But all part of the mind.

But why care?

Because why are we here? To know, love and serve God. Would you love God if you didn’t know Him? So what do you know about God. You know He has a triune nature. It’s a start. And it’s how you tell who is a true Christian.

Porque ¿por qué estamos aquí? Conocer, amar y servir a Dios. ¿Amarías a Dios si no lo conocieras? Entonces, ¿qué sabes de Dios? Sabes que Él tiene una naturaleza trina. Es un comienzo. Y es cómo dices quién es un verdadero cristiano.

And so, practical application. JPII said that family is the best image we have for the Trinity here on this Earth. How?

the family is the smallest unit of society and building block of society. If we get the family wrong, society crumbles. Many are trying to crumble society, how? By toppling the family. How? A large organization recently claimed on their website that they were against “We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement,” which is what Marx wanted, “about the hallowed co-relation of parents and child, becomes all the more disgusting, the more, by the action of Modern Industry, all the family ties among the proletarians are torn asunder, and their children transformed into simple articles of commerce and instruments of labour.”

And so, in worshipping well, the Catholic understanding of the doctrine of the Trinity, lets get our families right, The Father images the Father (that’s quite the responsibility to love and to avoid sin), the children image the Son (So children, be like Christ! Which means being obedient and trusting of your parents.), and then mothers, where does that leave you? Is the wife/mother not the soul of the home imaging the Holy Spirit? And notice, the Spirit is sent by the Father and the Son, proceeding from the Father and the Son. There is no complaining within God, there is only trust. We mistrust each other because we’ve been hurt by each other, parent, children, spouses. But that doesn’t change the ideal! In your uniqueness, you have the capacity, because you have been given of the Spirit at your Baptism and Confirmation and you are partakers of the One Bread and the One Chalice, you can live out your vocation.

Imitation of Christ, yes! But the imitation of God, imitatio Dei

“God is love and in Himself He lives a mystery of personal loving communion. Creating the human race in His own image and continually keeping it in being, God inscribed in the humanity of man and woman the vocation, and thus the capacity and responsibility, of love and communion. Love is therefore the fundamental and innate vocation of every human being.” JPII FC

JPII - God is asking us to be like him as He is, and who is he? He is a community of persons, like a family, like a society. “Being a person means striving towards self-realization, which can only be achieved through a sincere gift of self…The model for this interpretation of the person is God himself as Trinity, a communion of persons.”

What does this mean? Our happiness doesn’t come first, but we live with others, God, what do you want of me? How can I make a sacrifice of my life? Instead of, what do I get?

Christ is the mediator of the Father, and the Holy Spirit is our mediator to Christ.

So does love hurt? Yes, why? Because we've been hurt, so we close ourselves off to it, it costs too much, but at the end of our lives it’s all that matters. And I don’t just mean “true love” I mean, friendship and sacrifice.

One is Love, and three are the loved ones...

One is the Light, and three are the radiances,

One the Living Flame in three flames,

that consume the soul in its brilliance;

...Three are the fair ones, and one Beauty

alone, in which the soul drinks more sweetness

the more it goes back into the thicket;

and the rest is a dream.
