Some voices are recognizable and some are not. - Disneyland and hearing others laughter / Tam’s laugh.
I believe all people at some point get a nudge from the Holy Spirit. Some listen and some do not.
1 Timothy 2:1–4 NIV
1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Vs. 4: Who wants all ppl to be saved.
Some listen and some don’t. So who listens to the the voice of God’s Holy Spirit?
Jesus teaches about the good shepherd and points out that He is the good shepherd. But look there are some that hear his voice and others that don’t.
John 10:1–6 NIV
1 “Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. 2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5 But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” 6 Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.
Vs. 1-2: Ill: Enter through the front door vs. trying to enter through the back locked sliding glass door.
Vs. 2: Is the shepherd of the sheep.
Vs. 3: The sheep listen to his voice. He calls them out by name. (He knows them and takes care of them. They know he takes care of them and does not lead them astray)
Vs. 4: They follow because they know his voice. Some voices are recognizable and some are not. - Disneyland and hearing others laughter / Tam’s laugh.
Vs. 6: The Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.
John 10:24–30 NIV
24 The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”
Vs. 24: Tell us… are you the Messiah… tell us plainly.
Vs. 25: I did tell you.
Vs. 26: You do not believe because you are not my sheep.
Vs. 27: My sheep listen to my voice.
Vs. 28: I give them eternal life.
Vs. 30: You want me to tell you plainly? I and the Father are one.
All hear but not all listen. Why because they are not God’s.
John 8:47 NIV
47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”
There are times as a believer that I don’t sense or hear God’s voice. Where is the voice of God?
I think the loudness of our lives can sometimes drown out God’s voice to us.
1. When you don’t hear God’s voice, get away and get quite.
1 Kings 19:11–12 NIV
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
Vs. 11-12: Wind, Earthquake, and Fire are all signs that traditionally accompanied God’s Presence.
vs. 12: A gentle whisper. - When someone whispers you have to turn down the volume of other things, and draw close to hear.
2. The more we listen to God’s voice the more we will hear Him.
If you are not willing to listen to everything God has to say, you eventually won’t hear anything He has to say.
1 Thessalonians 5:19 NIV
19 Do not quench the Spirit.
One of the figures that is used for the Holy Spirit is fire. How do you quench a fire? You dampen it down and don’t let it burn. To quench the Spirit means that you refuse to do the will of God; that is, you are not listening to the Holy Spirit. You refuse to let the Holy Spirit be your Guide to lead you. You and I quench the Holy Spirit when we take matters into our own hands.
We want to hear the comforting voice but not the convicting voice.
Ephesians 4:30 NIV
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
This is the same teaching that Paul gave to the Ephesian believers: “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption” (Eph. 4:30). You cannot grieve a thing; you grieve a Person. The Holy Spirit is a Person, and He is grieved by sin in our lives. Also, He is quenched when we step out of the will of God.
3. When we don’t hear God’s voice, follow Him anyways.
Proverbs 3:5–6 NIV
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
4. When we don’t hear God’s voice, do the next right thing.
5. When we don’t hear God’s voice, he may speak through others.
Isaiah 30:20–21 NIV
20 Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. 21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”
Have you ever heard a Pastor teach and you felt like it was just for you. How could have He have known. He didn’t, God’s Spirit did and used the sermon to speak to you.
6. When you don’t hear God’s voice, search the bible.
Hebrews 4:12 NIV
12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
The more we listen and act on what the Spirit is telling us the easier it gets to hear him.
7. When you don’t hear God’s voice, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to you
Jeremiah 33:3 NIV
3 ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’
When was the last time you asked the Holy Spirit to speak to you?
Are you actively inviting God to speak to you.
